watching Our words
Strange! I am having trouble sleeping well these days. There is a weaving going on in my head. The language of the media disturbs me to my depths. The way words are being used astounds my sensitivities of spirit. They are words of accusation, blame, judgement, adversary, conflict; absolutely divorced from facts, information or clarity. they are words of emotional manipulation feeding fear, hate, greed, self and corporate interests. By e-mail, blogs, press conferences, videos, music, games, radio and TV talk shows, the dark side of the human mind is revealing a mindlessness, an absence of consciousness that keeps me sleepless and pacing the floor well past the midnight hours. Have we lost our minds as a culture and cultures? Are we so out of touch with reality that we are on a downward spiral into a black hole that spells the ultimate destruction of civilized life, or are we already there? I find it interesting that those who attempt to speak the language of vision, hope, compassion, empathy, peace, equality and respect are demonized as being murderers, unpatriotic, unchristian, socialist, communist or just plain evil etc. while those who fan the flames of war, torture, distrust, fear, hate, judgement and materialism are given a place in the sun. Yes! Our words are revealing the depth of the human darkness of this time. Words are gathering the mobs that threaten the very heart of the Democratic process that we defend. Words are defending the violations of human dignity and rights that revert us back to times of anarchy. Words are revealing the depths of the fears and paranoia that hide behind words of religious scripture and dogma, political ideology and just plain craziness. Words can be used for death and destruction or they can give Life and hope. It is time to look deeply at how we use words which means that we look deeply into our own hearts and minds. Language is an expression of our soul and spirit, an action of our deepest inner being. The question of us all; does our words seek death or do they empower life?
